Stevenage attractions, local Stevenage attractions, Hertfordshire
For full details on the history of the Stevenage area a trip to the local award-winning Stevenage Museum is in order. Admission is free of charge, making it a great day out for the whole family. Once inside you’ll find out how the area’s earliest settlers, the Roman lived. A series of interesting exhibitions are put on throughout the year, along with regular events in the form of talks and displays.
The church of St Nicholas on Rectory Lane boasts a Norman tower, whilst the rest of the building dates back to the 15th century. The site the church was built on is also of interest as it was the original site of the early Saxon settlement. Local brick and flint has been used to great effect in the structure and makes it well worth a look.
E M Forrester, author of great books such as Room With A View and Howards End, grew up in the Stevenage area. In fact the house where he lived as a child, Rooks Nest House, is now a grade I listed building and was used as the inspiration for the house in Howards End. The house is located on the Weston Road and is a classic example of 19th century housing and although not open to visitors it is worth hunting down if passing by.
Just outside Stevenage, accessible via junction 7 off the A1, is the glorious Knebworth House. Knebworth itself is today best known for its great concert venue in the grounds of Knebworth House, where some of the country’s most well known names appear each year. However, the original attraction of the area is the beautiful house with its Jacobean banqueting hall and ornate Edwardian dining room.
Stevenage’s shopping centre, Queensway was named in honour of Queen Elizabeth II after she opened the centre in 1959. There’s also a picturesque town square that commemorates the visit with a plaque on the clock tower surrounded by a colourful display of flowers. The shopping centre, in addition to the rest of the shops in the Stevenage area, offers the chance to satisfy all your retail therapy needs.
For great entertainment in the area check
out the Stevenage
Leisure Park,
which is one of the largest leisure complexes in the local
area. At the park you’ll find a 12 screen multiplex cinema,
a health and fitness club, a tenpin bowling alley, numerous
restaurants and even a nightclub.
